Tree branch stencil art
Aug 4 2011
Tree stencils are probably the most challenging to design well. The branches and trunk sections need to join together in a believable fashion and look natural. The stencil patterns also need to be easily configurable to obtain a diverse number of tree designs. And the stencil artists needs to be able to use the patterns as intuitively as possible so to build up large or smallish trees, that look great, in a reasonable amount of time.

This is a snapshot of my progress in the design process for the next tree ebook. The branch sections are looking OK and the branch markings add a cool new dimension to the limbs.

Maple leaves and thin wispy branches make for a cool Japanese maple tree. Needs an engaging focal point of interest for a canvas. Perhaps a bird or insect.

With the addition of more branches and a lorikeet as a focal point, the stencil set is starting to show some promises. Ultimately, the design has work as simple silhouette shapes with as few colors and tonal variations as possible.

The colors are now muted enough to allow this design to work as a wall mural.
